Why did the Hong Kong taxi driver refuse your fare?
If the driver has a sign over his Taxi light, it means the taxi is booked by someone else, out of service, or going cross harbour. They can refuse your fare.
There are four types of taxi in Hong Kong:
- Hong Kong Island taxis (red colour)
- Kowloon taxis (red colour)
- New Territories taxis (green colour)
- Lantau taxis (blue colour)
Each of these taxis prefer to stick to their own region. Sometimes they’ll take you to another region, sometimes they’ll charge you a fee for it (e.g. double tunnel tolls).
While you can hail a taxi anywhere in Hong Kong, cross harbour trips are cheaper and easier from a taxi stand. We’ve put together a map to of all the cross harbour taxi stands here:
