Shortage of air traffic controllers
Updated March 24, 2019 by CJ
Air traffic controllers have a stressful job. I once had the privilege of sitting next to an air traffic controller responsible for one of the busiest air spaces in the world. Her responsibility included the landing approach for Airport A and the take-off departure for Airport B.
Within my 15 minutes of observation she accomplished the following:
- Cleared a path for a medical emergency (passenger in and out of conciousness) to land;
- Had a pilot disregard her instruction to climb - causing a conflict in the two paths under control;
- Ask me about my background and how my day was.
Years of training and experience go in to making sure air traffic controllers perform their duty safely.
Air traffic control offers…
- A job that’s tough to automate
- Great pay and benefits
- The opportunity to travel the world.
There is currently a global shortage of air traffic controllers as it’s not an easy job to do.
